Volunteers are needed in Fulton, Gwinnett, Fayette, Clayton, Henry, Butts, DeKalb, Rockdale, Newton, Cobb, Cherokee, Paulding, Douglas, Carroll and Haralson, counties.


Disaster Volunteers

Volunteers who respond to disasters such as floods, tornadoes and hurricanes; as well as, house and apartment fires.  The impact to the victim is the same in either type or size of disaster; although, the scope may be different.  It is very satisfying to meet the immediate disaster needs; such as, shelter, food and clothing, in either situation.  There are also auxillary roles available to support our disaster response such as casework, emergency vehicle maintenance, disaster training, disaster publications, etc.

Office Hour Volunteers Time Commitment: Office Hour volunteers provide assistance during office hours Monday-Friday, 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at least 2 hours per week. Volunteers may choose to schedule time at the District Office or be on-call to respond as disasters occur.

After Hour Volunteers Time Commitment: After Hour volunteers are assigned to a rotating “on call” schedule to assist disaster clients after hours, on weekends and on holidays. Volunteering in this capacity has a time requirement of coverage during the hours of 4:30 p.m. to 8:15 a.m. during the on-call period.


Disaster Health and Mental Health Volunteers

Medical personnel are needed to assess health needs of disaster clients and to assist them in obtaining necessary health equipment, supplies, and/or medications.  They also protect the health and safety of disaster workers.  Mental health workers are needed for emotional support and to offer grief counseling when needed to disaster clients.  They also support volunteers in dealing with the aftermath of disasters.  Skills:  Must have Georgia license as RN, LPN, EMT, PA, MD, or valid Georgia Mental Health License.  Training:  In addition to training for general disaster response, specialized training is needed.  Time Commitment: Volunteer availability and time commitment is flexible.


Administrative Volunteers

Volunteers available during office hours (Monday-Friday, 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) are needed in various district offices and headquarters departments.  Volunteers will assist with administrative projects such as customer service, computer work, filing, organizing special projects, and more.  Skills:  organizational skills needed, customer service skills, computer skills a plus.  Training:  Volunteers will be trained on all aspects at onset of placement; all on the job training.  Time Commitment: varies by location from 4 hours per week to 10 hours per week.


Blood Services Volunteers

There are several types of volunteer opportunities within the Blood Services department.  Volunteers can be involved in promoting public awareness regarding the need for blood donations, assisting with administrative duties, greeting donors at blood drives, or monitoring donors for any reaction signs.  If you are interested in learning more about Blood Services opportunities, please contact Catherine Andrews and/or Monica Kirkwood, Volunteer Recruiters at (770) 852-4141 or 4142.


Facilitators/Presenters

Volunteers make presentations about specific Red Cross messages.  You may choose to educate the public about health and safety, preventing and preparing for disasters and/or telling the Red Cross story.  Some week day availability may be needed.  Skills:  This is an ideal opportunity for people comfortable with public speaking.  Training will be provided.  Time Commitment: Flexible.


Service to the Armed Forces

Volunteers speak to groups of Armed Forces personnel and their families prior to active duty deployments to educate them about Red Cross emergency services.  Volunteers will provide vital instruction on procedures for sending emergency messages.  Office volunteers are also needed for scheduling and administrative duties associated with the program. Skills:  Comfortable with public speaking, understanding of military process helpful but not necessary.  Training will be provided.  Time Commitment:  Varies, usually weekend mornings; some weekdays or evenings possible.


General Services Volunteer

Volunteers are needed during office hours (Monday-Friday, 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) to assistwith class and meeting room set-ups, organization of materials and equipment in storerooms, training equipment maintenance, handling minor building maintenance and repairs, checking vehicle maintenance schedules for Chapter fleet, and making deliveries from headquarters to other Metro Atlanta district offices.  Skills:  Attention to detail, valid driver’s license, basic computer knowledge is a plus, basic auto mechanics knowledge is a plus, ability to lift 50 lbs.  Time Commitment:: 4+ hours per week during office hours. 


Instructors

CPR, First Aid, and Babysitting Instructors:  Volunteers become certified to teach Red Cross classes to the community such as CPR, First Aid, and Babysitter’s Training.  Training:  Instructors must take a 16 hour instructor training course, in addition to becoming certified in the specific skills themselves.  Fees are associated with the instructor courses.  (The instructor training course in CPR/FA is $179).  There may be some partial scholarships available for volunteers that are already involved with the Red Cross in other capacities.  Skills:  Comfortable speaking to large groups.  Public speaking/training experience a plus.  Time Commitment:  Flexible.
