2006 Volunteer of the Year: Bob Nemo

Photo of Bob Nemo

Bob Nemo is a man of action. He has the ability to see a need, then step in to fill it by leading others, training personnel, changing systems or simply doing the job himself.

In the two years that he led the Disaster Action Team for the Central District Office, Bob strengthened his volunteer team by training and challenging experienced fellow members to take on new levels of responsibility. As a result, he grew the team’s capacity to respond to an ever-increasing number of local fires.

As Administrator of Material Support Services for our Chapter, Bob saw the need to recruit more local volunteers to serve as “Group Leads” in this function to help with the logistical support that is critical during large disaster operations.

During Hurricane Katrina last year, while serving as the Red Cross Administrator in Material Support Services for both the Chapter and the state relief operations, Bob continued to conduct his training workshops. He and his growing team supported shelters, client service centers, headquarters activities and a volunteer workforce of thousands.

Following Katrina, Bob was determined to build even greater capacity in Material Support Services and set out to hold a weekend training. He brought in experienced volunteers from our national office and other Red Cross chapters to assist him. As a result, the Chapter has a new group of volunteers trained and ready for this year’s hurricane season. Bob has also supported disaster leadership volunteer Fred Runkle in developing a Chapter communication response plan and identifying ways to increase the chapter’s communication capacity during disasters.

Inspiring others by working tirelessly himself, Bob has the ability to build an esprit de corps among his volunteer team members. Through his vision and his leadership ability, he continually ensures that our Chapter will be ready for the next disaster.
